Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Nusantara Power, a subsidiary of the Indonesian electric power company PLN, for the introduction and construction of innovative Small Modular Reactors (SMR) in Indonesia. The MOU was signed on Dec. 1 (local time) at the venue of the 28th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) in Dubai, the UAE.
Through this MOU, both companies agreed to cooperate in various fields, including joint preliminary economic and technical feasibility studies for the deployment of innovative SMRs in Indonesia, R&D collaboration for the development of local-specific technologies, and the establishment of a working group to enhance personnel and technical exchanges in the nuclear sector. KHNP showcased its innovative SMR technology and the SMR Smart NetZero City model at COP28, and this MOU is the first signed by KHNP during the conference.
Hwang Ju-ho, president of KHNP, said, “Based on our know-how accumulated from domestic and international nuclear power plant operations and construction, we look forward to cooperating with PLN NP in Indonesia’s decarbonization and moving forward as strategic partners in the nuclear sector.”
